While the news might come as a surprise to loyal customers, Chang assures that the heart and soul of Euro Pane will remain unchanged.

“I’m just going to take a day to breathe, I want to read a book,” Chang shared, expressing her desire for a well-deserved respite after years of early mornings and bustling bakery operations. She stayed on for a few months to ensure a smooth transition, demonstrating her dedication to the legacy she built. Having always had a passion for art, Chang is also looking forward to exploring museums and indulging in her creative side.

Chang’s journey to becoming a celebrated baker is as unique as Euro Pane’s offerings. Originally from Seoul, she moved to the U.S. at 14 and initially pursued a career in nursing, working in intensive care units. However, her passion for pastry led her to study under renowned figures like Jim Dodge in San Francisco and at Lenôtre in Paris. Her experience also includes working alongside Nancy Silverton at Campanile, where she honed her breakfast expertise. This rich background culminated in the opening of the first Euro Pane in Pasadena in 1995, marking the beginning of Pasadena’s love affair with her baked creations.

For those concerned about the future of their favorite Euro Pane treats, rest assured. Sumi Chang has entrusted her treasured recipes to the capable hands of her long-time employees. She emphasized that she left all her recipes with the bakery team, ensuring that the familiar tastes and quality that patrons have come to love will continue. So, while Chang may no longer be at the helm, the Euro Pane experience is expected to remain consistent.

Even with a change of pace, Chang’s passion for baking remains deeply ingrained. She still wakes up at 3 a.m., but instead of heading to the bakery, she is channeling her energy into creating a test kitchen in her garage. Experimenting with her sous vide machine and crafting homemade jams are now part of her culinary explorations. While a non-compete agreement prevents her from opening another bakery for the next three years, Chang’s words offer a glimmer of hope for the future: “Baking is in my DNA,” she affirmed. For now, Euro Pane Bakery Pasadena continues to welcome customers at 950 E. Colorado Blvd. and 345 E. Colorado Blvd., Suite 101, carrying forward Sumi Chang’s legacy of deliciousness.

While Pasadena sees a change at Euro Pane, other culinary updates are happening in the Los Angeles area.
