The Bank of Albania operates a free-floating exchange rate regime.
The value of the Lek against foreign currencies is determined freely in the foreign exchange market. Exchange rate fluctuations reflect the free movement of goods and capital in Albania’s trade and financial exchanges with its trading partners.
Without prejudice to the free exchange rate regime, the Bank of Albania may conduct operations in the foreign exchange market with the objective of adjusting the exchange rate to the level determined by fundamental macroeconomic factors, avoiding disturbances, and increasing or decreasing the foreign exchange reserve.
The Bank of Albania calculates the official exchange rate as well as the average value of bid price and ask price for the Euro and US dollar currencies, based on standardized quotes of participants in the interbank market, during the time interval 11.30-12.00. This rate is a reference level (single), which can be used by interested parties for trading, valuation, comparison, and statistical purposes.
