EURO 2024 Champion: Spain

EURO 2024 culminated on July 14, 2024, with Spain’s victory over England (2-1) in the final held at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. Spain emerged as the new European Champion.

EURO 2024 Qualification Information

Host nation Germany automatically qualified for EURO 2024. Russia was excluded from the tournament. Qualification group matches took place from March 23rd to November 21st, 2023. Play-offs on March 21st and 26th, 2024, determined the final three participants: Poland, Ukraine, and Georgia.

The group draw on December 2nd finalized the group stage composition:

Group A: Germany, Scotland, Hungary, Switzerland
Group B: Spain, Croatia, Italy, Albania
Group C: Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England
Group D: Poland, Netherlands, Austria, France
Group E: Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine
Group F: Türkiye, Georgia, Portugal, Czechia

Understanding the Rules for Round of 16 Qualification

The qualification rules for the Round of 16 are detailed. Typically, the top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, advance. Tie-breakers include fair play ratings (penalties for yellow and red cards) and UEFA European Qualifiers rankings.

The UEFA overall European Qualifiers rankings and even a drawing of lots are considered in specific tie situations, especially since host nation Germany isn’t included in the European Qualifiers rankings. Penalty shoot-outs in the final group match are also possible under certain tie conditions. See Example penalty shoot-out

Crucially, direct comparison results take precedence over goal difference and total goals scored in group matches when teams are tied. A team can rank higher despite a worse goal difference due to head-to-head results. See Example direct comparison

Group Ranking Criteria (UEFA Regulations Article 20):

Higher points in all group matches.
Higher points in direct encounters.
Superior goal difference in direct encounters.
More goals scored in direct encounters.
Repeat criteria 2-4 for teams still tied.
Superior goal difference in all group matches.
More goals scored in all group matches.
Higher number of wins in all group matches (third-placed teams only).
Lower disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion = 3 points).
Position in UEFA European Qualifiers rankings.

Additional Rule: If two teams are tied after criteria 1-7 in the last group match, and no other team has the same points, a penalty shoot-out determines their rank, overriding criteria 9 and 10.

Note: Criterion 8 only applies when comparing third-placed teams. Criteria 3, 4, and 5 are relevant when more than two teams are tied.

To determine the best four third-placed teams, criteria 1 and 6-10 are used. Criteria 2-5 are not applicable for third-placed teams.

The opponents for the winners of Groups B, C, E, and F in the Round of 16 depend on the groups from which the third-placed teams qualify. UEFA has defined 15 possible scenarios to ensure teams from the same group don’t face each other in the Round of 16. View allocation table
