France has reaffirmed its commitment to Haiti by pledging a significant financial contribution to support the beleaguered nation. Reflecting deep concern over the escalating crisis in Haiti, France announced a contribution of 3 million euros, equivalent to over 3 million US dollars, to a dedicated trust fund aimed at deploying a multinational security support mission. This financial commitment underscores France’s dedication to fostering stability and security in Haiti, alongside broader international efforts.
The announcement was made during a United Nations Security Council briefing, where France’s representative voiced strong support for the swift deployment of a multinational security support mission for the Haitian National Police. The contribution, 3 Million Euros To Dollars, highlights a portion of France’s comprehensive aid package to Haiti, which also includes an additional €850,000 for language training for police officers involved in the multinational mission. This training, facilitated through the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, will focus on enhancing French and Creole language skills, crucial for effective communication and operations in Haiti.
Beyond financial aid for security, France is actively advocating for a robust sanctions regime under the UN Security Council. This regime aims to target individuals and entities contributing to Haiti’s destabilization, particularly those involved in gang activities and illegal trafficking. France insists that these sanctions should be comprehensive, encompassing all actors exacerbating the security crisis.
Recognizing that long-term stability requires political solutions, France is firmly behind the ongoing efforts to foster political dialogue in Haiti. The goal is to facilitate an inclusive agreement that paves the way for free and fair elections and the restoration of key institutions. France commended the roles of CARICOM and the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) in mediating this crucial inter-Haitian political dialogue, emphasizing the importance of human rights protection and combating impunity throughout this process.
On the humanitarian front, France expressed grave concern over the deteriorating living conditions faced by the Haitian population. In response to this urgent need, France has already committed €13.5 million in humanitarian aid for 2023, a substantial portion of which, €11 million, is dedicated to food assistance.
