Even if Gareth Southgate’s squad faces a loss against Slovenia in their upcoming game on Tuesday, qualification is assured. The Euro 2024 format allows the top two teams from each of the six groups to automatically qualify for the knockout phase, along with the four best third-placed teams. This safety net means England can approach the Slovenia match with less pressure regarding qualification, but still with plenty to play for in terms of group standing and knockout stage seeding.

A victory against Slovenia in Cologne would guarantee England tops Group C. A draw could also be enough to secure the top spot, provided that Denmark doesn’t defeat Serbia by more than a single goal in their concurrent match. However, a loss to Slovenia, combined with a win for Denmark against Serbia, would see England finish third in the group. If Denmark fails to win against Serbia in that scenario, England would still finish second. The ultimate finishing position in Group C will dictate England’s opponent in the round of 16, with various possibilities depending on the outcomes in other groups.

The results elsewhere have also confirmed qualification for other major teams. Albania’s loss not only benefited England but also ensured that both France and the Netherlands have progressed to the knockout stages from Group D, even before their final group games. They are set to play against Poland and Austria respectively on Tuesday to determine their final group positions.
