Reopening After Adversity: Overcoming Fire and Pandemic Challenges

The journey to reopening wasn’t easy for Euro Food Market. In January 2020, a devastating electrical fire caused significant damage, forcing the store to close its doors. Just as renovations began, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, adding another layer of complexity and uncertainty. Store Manager Figen Kartal recounts the challenging period, “We thought maybe we could not open again. And then when we tried to fix everything and then the coronavirus happens and everything was closed. It was crazy.”

Despite these setbacks, the owners were determined to rebuild and reopen. The extensive renovation not only repaired the fire damage but also introduced a brand-new bakery section, enhancing the store’s offerings. Euro Food Market officially welcomed back customers in December, marking a significant victory over adversity.

A Vital Community Hub for European Food Lovers

For many residents in the Levittown area, particularly those of Turkish, Albanian, and Bosnian descent, Euro Food Market is more than just a grocery store; it’s a vital link to their culinary traditions. As Kartal explains, “Our Turkish and Albanian and Bosnian customers no longer had a place where they could buy their food. We are one of the only stores like this, so when we were closed they would have to drive to New Jersey to shop for groceries.” The store’s reopening was therefore met with immense relief and enthusiasm from the community.
