Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Euro-Latino American Summer School of Myology (EVELAM) continued its tradition of excellence with its 2023 edition in Colonia de Sacramento, Uruguay. Building on the success of virtual editions in 2020 and 2021 and the hybrid Quito 2022 event, EVELAM 2023 reaffirmed the irreplaceable value of in-person collaboration in the field of myology. This year’s event, held from November 29th to December 2nd, maintained a hybrid format, attracting a diverse group of participants to discuss the latest advancements in neuromuscular disorders.
EVELAM 2023’s scientific program, endorsed by TREAT-NMD, underscored its commitment to bridging European and Latin American expertise in myology. The program spanned a comprehensive range of topics, from foundational myology principles to cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for neuromuscular conditions. A significant portion of the discussions addressed the critical issue of access to high-cost disease-modifying therapies for spinal muscular atrophy across Latin America, a topic of immense importance for the region. Furthermore, practical workshops focusing on clinical vignettes for both pediatric and adult patients provided invaluable hands-on learning opportunities for attendees.
The success of EVELAM 2023 was significantly bolstered by the exceptional efforts of the local organizing committee, led by Dr. Graciela Barros and Dr. Conrado Medici. Their dedication, combined with the renowned Uruguayan hospitality, created an enriching and welcoming environment for all participants. Crucially, the unwavering support from AFM-Téléthon France, a key European organization in the fight against neuromuscular diseases, alongside the generous contributions from pharmaceutical industry leaders Scienza, Sanofi, Biogen, PTC, and Roche, proved essential in ensuring the event’s overall success and impact. This collaboration highlights the strong European engagement and support for advancing myology research and education within the Latin American context.
Looking ahead, the myology community eagerly anticipates the next EVELAM edition, scheduled to take place in Cuzco, Perú from November 27th to 30th, 2024. The promise of convening in the historic setting of Machu Picchu adds another layer of excitement to the upcoming event.
