Why Euro Mounters Are Becoming the Go-To for Modern Hunters

For years, I’ll admit, I cringed at the sight of those truck-bed trophy photos. To me, a true hunting success shot meant showcasing the hunter with their prize right where the harvest happened, decked out in Mossy Oak, trusty gun or bow in hand. Taking the time to stage the scene like that felt like a mark of respect for the animal and a way to truly capture the hunt’s story for years to come.

This same feeling extended to how hunters treated their hard-earned antlers. The idea of tossing them in a garage box, out of sight, out of mind, seemed like a disservice. Just like a well-composed trophy photo, displaying a trophy is about honoring the animal and keeping those hunt memories alive.

However, my perspective has shifted dramatically. I’ve become a huge advocate for European-style skull mounts – or as some call them, Euro Mounters – for deer, elk, and other big game. Frankly, my earlier views played a part in this change. A skull mount is visually appealing, undeniably trendy, and most importantly, a far cry from neglecting and forgetting about the animal and the hunt it represents.

Skull mounts have been around for ages, so why are euro mounters suddenly the “in” thing among big game hunters?

When I bagged my first mature buck as a young hunter, a shoulder mount was immediately on my mind. But reality hit when I spoke to my local taxidermist – the cost was substantial. Living in a small town had its advantages, though. My taxidermist, knowing my family, offered a deal: a $100 deposit, with the remaining $250 due upon completion. Excited, I agreed and spent the next several months saving up to afford my first shoulder mount.

After receiving it, I fell into a common hunter’s trap: believing shoulder mounts were only for “trophy” animals. Years later, a simple phrase resonated with me: “If it was a good enough trophy to harvest, it’s worth being proud of.”

A skull mount, or euro mounter, is the ideal choice for passionate hunters. They are more affordable, space-saving, and quicker to get back. These benefits, coupled with the creative freedom euro mounters offer, are key reasons for their surge in popularity.

Cost-Effective Trophy Display

Back when I was a young hunter saving for that shoulder mount, the price tag was $350. Even then, for a country kid, that was a significant sum. Today, shoulder mount costs have skyrocketed. The average shoulder mount for a whitetail deer in the US now ranges from $500 to $600. In contrast, a skull mount averages around $150, often including a plaque or mounting hardware. For just the skull mount preparation alone, you might be looking at closer to $75.

For dedicated hunters who consistently harvest mature bucks annually, the cost difference is significant. Plus, shoulder mounts demand considerably more wall space than sleek euro mounters.

Fast Turnaround Times

The rapid turnaround of euro mounters is another major draw. Shoulder mounts are a lengthy process, often taking months. Harvest a buck in the fall, and it might not be ready until spring turkey season – almost long enough to forget the finer details of the buck.

Euro mounters, however, can be completed in days. This quick turnaround keeps the excitement of the hunt and harvest fresh, unlike the delayed gratification of shoulder mounts where the thrill can fade as attention shifts to other seasons and hunts like turkey or spring fishing.

Taxidermists I spoke with confirm the rising popularity of skull mounts over the last decade or so. However, they still process significantly more shoulder mounts, estimating a ratio of about 40 euro mounters to 150 shoulder mounts annually.

The quick processing time is particularly impactful for DIY enthusiasts and those who offer skull mount services as a side business. In rural areas, many individuals are now offering euro mounter services, processing dozens each season. Some utilize dermestid beetles in bug boxes for natural cleaning, while others employ knives and pressure washers followed by whitening treatments. Either way, they provide a fast service while generating extra income.

Versatile and Creative Display Options

The sheer versatility in displaying euro mounters is the final major factor fueling their popularity. The options are truly endless.

I’ve seen euro mounters casually displayed atop kitchen cabinets, used as unique coffee table centerpieces in living rooms, and mounted on all sorts of natural and handcrafted bases like old fence posts, driftwood, and custom wooden plaques.

Commercially available mounts, like those from Skull Hooker, offer even more polished display solutions. Their Wall Mount and Desk Mount are favorites of mine, providing secure and stylish ways to showcase skulls for guests and fellow hunters to admire.

I personally use the Skull Hooker Table Mount on my desk, kitchen table, and as a rotating decorative element throughout my home. Its portability makes rearranging displays easy and safe, protecting the mount from damage.

Considering the dedication and effort invested in a hunt, why relegate antlers to a dusty corner? Hunting is more than just the harvest; it’s about honoring the animal, cherishing memories, and expressing gratitude for a successful hunt. A euro mounter is a cost-effective and respectful way to showcase your harvest, ensuring those hunting memories remain a visible part of your life for years to come. Next time you consider setting aside those antlers, think about a euro mount – a humble yet impactful way to celebrate your hunting achievements.
