Record-Breaking Crowds at UEFA Women’s EURO 2022: A Landmark Tournament

The UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 concluded in spectacular fashion, mirroring its impressive शुरुआत with record-breaking attendance. A staggering 87,192 spectators filled Wembley Stadium to witness England’s triumphant victory over Germany in the final. This momentous occasion propelled the tournament’s total attendance to over half a million, establishing unprecedented benchmarks at every stage and solidifying its place in history.

Prior to EURO 2022, the benchmark for Women’s EURO game attendance was 41,301, set during the 2013 final in Solna, Sweden, between Germany and Norway. However, this record was emphatically shattered right from the opening whistle of the 2022 edition. An impressive crowd of 68,871 fans flocked to Old Trafford to watch England narrowly defeat Austria 1-0, signaling the start of a tournament like no other.

Records continued to tumble throughout the group stage, with the overall tournament attendance record of 240,055, established at the 2017 finals, quickly becoming a distant memory. As the knockout rounds approached, the cumulative attendance for the 2022 finals had already soared to 357,993. This meant that even without a single spectator attending any of the quarter-final matches onwards, the previous record average attendance of 9,000 per game would have been comfortably surpassed.

Instead of slowing down, the momentum intensified. New attendance records were set during the quarter-finals and semi-finals, building towards an unforgettable finale. The 87,192 passionate fans at Wembley Stadium for the final not only eclipsed all previous turnouts in the tournament but also established a new European record for a women’s international game. This incredible support drove the tournament’s total attendance to an astounding 574,875 and the average crowd size to an impressive 18,544 per match, demonstrating the immense growth and popularity of women’s football.

England has continued to experience remarkable crowds at Wembley since their EURO 2022 victory. 83,132 fans attended the Finalissima match against Brazil in April 2023, followed by 71,632 for a UEFA Women’s Nations League game against the Netherlands eight months later. A EURO qualifier against Sweden in April 2024 drew an unprecedented 63,428 spectators, and a friendly match against the United States in November of the same year attracted a world-leading women’s friendly attendance of 78,346. These figures further emphasize the enduring legacy of Euros 2022 and its impact on women’s football viewership.
