Understanding the Exchange Rate on the Euro

The euro foreign exchange reference rates are crucial for anyone tracking currency values against the euro. Published by the European Central Bank (ECB), these rates offer a daily snapshot of the euro’s standing relative to other major world currencies. It’s important to note that these reference rates are typically updated around 4:00 PM Central European Time (CET) on every working day, except on TARGET closing days.

These rates are derived from a concertation procedure among central banks across Europe, usually taking place around 2:10 PM CET. While these exchange rates on the euro are publicly available for informational purposes, the ECB strongly advises against using them for transactional purposes. Important Notice Regarding EUR/RUB Exchange Rate

Due to ongoing market conditions affecting EUR/RUB trading, the ECB has suspended publishing the euro reference exchange rate for the Russian rouble. This suspension is in effect until further notice because the ECB is unable to determine a representative reference rate under the current circumstances. The last published EUR/RUB reference rate was on March 1, 2022.

For those needing historical exchange rate data, the ECB provides several download options, including the latest reference rates and PDFs for specific dates. Time series data is also available, compatible with spreadsheet software using a dot “.” as a decimal separator, common in UK or US formats.
