Euro 2024 Final: Spain Coach Downplays Favourites Tag Against England

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has dismissed the notion of his team being favourites in the highly anticipated European Championship final against England. Despite Spain’s impressive run to the final, de la Fuente insists the upcoming match is evenly balanced.

Having secured victories in all six of their Euro 2024 matches, Spain’s path to the final in Berlin has been remarkable. They overcame formidable opponents, including host nation Germany in a quarter-final clash and pre-tournament favourites France in a compelling semi-final showdown.

This sets the stage for a thrilling final showdown against England on Sunday night. England’s journey to the final has been more challenging, requiring a late goal against Slovakia and an extra-time victory in the round of 16, followed by a penalty shootout win against Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Gareth Southgate’s England displayed a more convincing performance in their semi-final against the Netherlands in Dortmund. However, they are still considered slight underdogs against Spain, who last lifted the European Championship trophy in 2012.

In his pre-match press conference, De la Fuente stated unequivocally that there is “no favourite” for the final. He believes the match is a contest between “the two best teams” in the tournament.

“We anticipate a complex match because we are facing two exceptional teams, arguably the best at the Euros,” De la Fuente commented.

“We are enjoying a great moment, but I expect a very balanced game. In finals, the smallest details often determine the outcome.”

He further emphasized the experience within his squad, stating, “Many of our players have experience in high-stakes matches, and we are approaching this final with composure and pride.”

“Reaching the final of the European Championship is a significant milestone in football, and we are eager to play this match. I can see the determination and spirit in the players. They have given their all to reach this point.”

“The enthusiasm this team has generated is truly special. They have earned this moment through hard work and dedication. Witnessing the nation’s support behind this team is truly wonderful.”

De la Fuente also provided an update on midfielder Gavi, who is sidelined with a long-term ACL injury sustained in November. “Gavi will be with us throughout the final day. He will be our symbolic 27th player,” de la Fuente confirmed, highlighting the team spirit and inclusivity.

Spain will be without Pedri, who suffered an injury in the quarter-final against Germany, and forward Ayoze Perez, who remains unavailable.

However, there is positive news regarding defenders Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand. Both are available for selection after missing the semi-final victory against France due to suspension, bolstering Spain’s defensive options for the final.
