Understanding the Women’s Euro Qualifiers Format
The Women’s European Qualifiers have adopted a new format, mirroring the league system of the Nations League, to determine the participants for the Women’s EURO 2025. Teams were divided into Leagues A, B, and C, competing in groups within these leagues through a round-robin system with home and away fixtures across six matchdays from April to July.
Qualification and Finals
The top two teams from each group in League A have directly qualified for the Women’s EURO 2025 tournament in Switzerland, joining the host nation who also participated in League B. Switzerland’s automatic qualification as hosts means that despite topping their League B group, their place in the finals was already secured.
The remaining seven spots for the final tournament will be decided through a two-round play-off system scheduled for October and November/December.
Play-off Structure
The play-offs are structured in two paths for the first round:
Path 1: Teams finishing third and fourth in League A will compete against the group winners of League C and the three highest-ranked runners-up from League C. Eight winners will emerge from this path to progress to the second round.
Path 2: The group winners from League B and the two best-ranked runners-up from League B will face the remaining two runners-up and four third-placed teams from League B in six separate ties. Six winners will proceed to the second round.
Second Round: The winners from both Path 1 and Path 2 of the first round will converge in the second round. These teams will be drawn into seven ties, seeded based on the European Qualifiers overall league rankings to ensure competitive balance. The seven victorious teams from this round will secure their places in the Women’s EURO 2025 finals.
Note: Adjustments to the play-off paths were made to accommodate host nation Switzerland’s participation and qualification process.
Promotion and Relegation for Future Competitions
Beyond EURO qualification, these qualifiers also determined league placement for the next UEFA Women’s Nations League cycle in 2025-27.
- League A: Winners, runners-up, and third-placed teams remain in League A.
- League B: Runners-up and the three highest-ranked third-placed teams stay in League B.
- League C: Runners-up, third-placed, and fourth-placed teams continue in League C.
- Promotion: Winners of League B and League C are promoted to the league above for the next Nations League.
- Relegation: Fourth-placed teams in League A and League B, along with the lowest-ranked third-placed team from League B, are relegated to the league below.
