Understanding the Qualification Pathways

League Phase Structure

The Women’s European Qualifiers adopted a league system, mirroring the format of the Nations League. Teams were divided into leagues (A, B, and C) and further into groups of four or three (in League C). Over six matchdays held between April and July, each team faced every other team in their group twice – once at home and once away.

The primary objective of this league phase was twofold: to determine qualification for the Women’s EURO 2025 and to establish promotion and relegation standings for the subsequent UEFA Women’s Nations League.

For Euro 2025 qualification, the top two teams from each League A group automatically secured their tickets to the finals in Switzerland, joining the host nation who also competed in League B. The remaining seven spots would be decided through a two-round play-off system in October and November/December.

Navigating the Play-offs

The play-offs are structured in two rounds to determine the final seven European Championship qualifiers.

Round 1: This round is divided into two paths:

  • Path 1: Teams finishing third and fourth in League A compete against the group winners and the three highest-ranked runners-up from League C. To rank the League C runners-up fairly, results against fourth-placed teams are excluded. The eight winners from these matches advance to Round 2.
  • Path 2: The four group winners and two top-ranked runners-up from League B are drawn against the remaining two runners-up and four third-placed teams from League B. The six winners progress to Round 2.

Round 2: Teams from both Path 1 and Path 2 converge in this round. They are drawn into seven pairings. Seeding is applied for the seven highest-ranked teams based on their European Qualifiers overall league rankings. The victors of these seven ties secure their place at the Women’s EURO 2025.

Note: Adjustments to the play-off paths were made to accommodate Switzerland’s participation. As hosts, they were guaranteed a finals berth despite competing in and winning their League B group. This resulted in the highest-ranked fourth-placed team from League B entering Round 1 Path 2, and adjustments to the draw seeding for the six ties.

League Progression: Promotion and Relegation

Beyond Euro qualification, these qualifiers also determined team movement between leagues for the next Nations League cycle (2025–27):

  • League A: Winners, runners-up, and third-placed teams remain in League A.
  • League B: Runners-up and the three highest-ranked third-placed teams stay in League B.
  • League C: Runners-up, third-placed, and fourth-placed teams remain in League C.
  • Promotion: Winners of Leagues B and C are promoted to the league above.
  • Relegation: All fourth-placed teams in Leagues A and B, and the lowest-ranked third-placed team from League B, are relegated to the league below.
